Case ANWB

6,000 members, one well-founded recommendation to Dutch parliament

On the road-pricing scheme, ANWB consulted 6,000 members over three days. The resulting recommendation went to every member of parliament.

The kilometre charge was technical and controversial, and ANWB didn't want to speak on behalf of its members without knowing what those members actually thought. A survey would have produced numbers, but not a well-founded position.

The challenge

How do you meaningfully involve thousands of members in a topic that many people find complicated, without it turning into votes for or against with no explanation?

The approach

Over seven online dialogues spread across three days, more than 6,000 members discussed the proposals with each other. They responded anonymously to each other's arguments, so that the nuances and doubts became visible too.

Within two weeks, there was a report. It went to the government, and every member of parliament received a copy.

The outcome

The recommendation was based on the carefully weighed opinion of more than 6,000 members, including their nuances and doubts.

The insight ANWB

Within two weeks there was a report, and every member of parliament received a copy.

“Synthetron helped us in a very professional way to reach more than 6,000 members in online conversations about the key issues of the kilometre-charge proposal.”
