how ANWB engaged its members in the Road Pricing debate.

The introduction of Road Pricing had been the subject of intense political debate for years. One thing became increasingly clear: without broad public support, the introduction of this type of traffic management would prove extremely difficult. ANWB, as the largest advocate for Dutch motorists, wanted to provide the government with a clear and comprehensive overview of how its members perceived the proposed solutions. That is quite a challenge: how do you engage 6,000 members on such a controversial and technical topic?

Our approach

Synthetron and the ANWB joined forces and organised a total of seven online dialogues in which more than 6,000 members discussed the key points of the Road Pricing proposal. The 'digital members' meeting' was conducted in seven sessions over a period of three days.

"I'm glad that ANWB has given us the opportunity to have a say on this issue. It's a useful and valuable discussion. I can finally express my opinion."

What did it deliver?

In-depth insight into what members think and why. The Synthetron method powerfully combines qualitative and quantitative research and provides a complete picture of the underlying feelings and motivations of participants. We didn't just hear what members thought, but also why they thought it.

Honest feedback, without filter. Due to the anonymity of the software, all opinions carry equal weight. Members dare to say what they really think – critical voices about the policy also come to the surface.

Efficient and scalable. The ideas, opinions and insights of 6,000 ANWB members were inventoried, categorised and analysed within two weeks. Viewing rooms made it possible for media and ANWB management to watch live.

Co-creation with stakeholders. By actively involving members in the policy issue, they feel heard and engaged. The report that resulted from this automatically had support from the membership base.

The result

In a short time, more than 6,000 members participated in seven sessions. The comprehensive report with in-depth insights was combined with the quantitative results from Ruigrok NetPanel and submitted to the government. The results were presented during a special Union Council meeting and a press conference with CEO Guido van Woerkom. Notably: every member of parliament received a copy of the report.

The result is policy advice with broad support, because it was developed together with the people it directly affects. Synthetron thus provided the building blocks for policy that citizens can truly relate to.

"Synthetron helped us in a highly professional manner to reach more than 6,000 members in online conversations about the key points of the Road Pricing proposal. Our members were satisfied because they found participating easy and engaging. For us, it was great to obtain a consolidated result on such a large scale in an efficient and transparent manner. We gained in-depth insight into what our members think, feel and why, on the various policy issues. The excellent report enabled us to provide balanced and well-founded advice to the government with support from our membership base." - Guido van Woerkom, Former President & CEO, ANWB
